Last weekend's issue of USA WEEKEND Magazine had an article entitled Gifts from the Kitchen in which celebrity chefs suggest consumable treats that can be made at home and given as gifts.
Everyone's favorite TV chef, the delightful Giada De Laurentiis (whose equally famous grandfather, filmmaker Dino De Laurentiis, sadly passed away last week) offered up her home brewed recipe for orangecello, prefaced by her comments that it's "the one people really ooh and aah over. I make it with orange peel to give it a sweeter finish," she says. "It's extremely simple and an unbelievably fabulous gift because you can't buy it anywhere." De Laurentiis says she pours it into a beautiful glass bottle presents it with a tag that includes a recipe or two. for such goodies as Orangecello Cheesecake.
As much as I hate to differ with Giada, clearly, she doesn't know about our Gioia Luisa Orangecello, made with only the finest oranges from Sorrento, a quality that makes it impossible to duplicate in a home kitchen. And, like Giada's homemade version, it comes in Gioia Luisa's own beautiful signature octagonal sided bottle with a colorful art deco label and a neck tag with recipes!
As my own mom always says, why bother to spend the time, effort and money to make something if the version you can buy in the store is just as good as or better than what you can make at home?
What Giada surely means is that you can only buy orangecello in select spirit shops whose owners are clever enough to know they should be stocking it. If your favorite retailer doesn't carry it, ask them to order it for you from our FL distributor, The Opici Wine Company.
