Santa Alicia Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 2008
BEST BUY! 87 points
"Nothing wrong with this under-$10 Cab and in truth it’s really quite good and drinkable. Black cherry, cola and other common aromas lead to cassis, blackberry and other standard flavors. With good tannins and structure, this is your quintessential value-priced Cabernet from Chile."
More important than the score itself is the description... The phrase "quintessential value priced Cabernet from Chile," has a nice ring to it.
Merriam-Webster defines "quintessential" as "typical" or "representative." For a wine, that's a fine compliment because it means that the wine is varietally correct and that there are no surprises. It's exactly how you'd want or expect a cabernet sauvignon to taste.
I also like that the review calls attention to Santa Alicia's "under $10" price point that's suitable for everyday drinking, even in these recessionary times.
